The prophet, Isaiah, describes the coming Messiah with a variety of titles - Key, Root, Emmanuel. A millennium and a half ago Christians incorporated some of these titles into worship as they approached Christmas. These became known as the “Great O Antiphons” because they expressed the longing of God’s people for the Messiah to come and fulfill everything these titles promised. The well-known Christmas carol, O Come O Come Emmanuel is structured around the Great O’s. This Advent season, we will be joining with saints of old to reflect on these Messianic titles as we await the second coming of our Messiah. O Emmanuel, Come!
